LASIK Risks
Like all surgeries, LASIK carries some risks. The risks listed here are the SEVEN most common to consider as you contemplate on having surgery.
1. Over-treatment or under-treatment
Your eye may be over-corrrected, or under-corrected. You may need to have additional surgries in order to achieve your desired results.
2. Short-Lived Results
You may need additional correction in the future. As of now, on-going studies are still trying to determine the longitivity of the results typically obtained from LASIK surgery.
3. Need for Reading Glasses
The need for reading glasses increase as we age. LASIK typically corrects short and near sightedness and you get older, you may still need reading glasses. Several LASIK procedures are being tested that may be able to eliminate the need for reading glasses we get older.
4. Chronic Dry Eyes
LASIK typically causes drier eyes and this can worsen in patients with pre-existing dry eye condtions. This can lead to chronic eye dryness which can be uncomfortable and permanent.
5. Other Visual Conditions
Driving a night could become difficult as LASIK can cause visual glares, halos, and other visual field changes that can affect how your eyes focus and see things. Also, your vision could be compromised and reduce in dim light situation.
6. Both Eye Treatment
Treating both eyes increases the risk of adverse events occuring during and after LASIK surgery. Some people have opted to have seperate surgeries, allowing one eye to recover prior to proceeding with a second eye.
7. Permanent Loss of Vision
Losing vision permanently is rare, but possible. You should keep this in mind as you consider LASIK. To reduce the risk of this happening, use the checklist to make sure that you fit all the criteria, and divulge your pertinent medical history such as eye problem and medications being taken to the surgeon as you both weigh the risks and benefits of proceding with the surgery.
