LASIK Phakic
A new alternative to correcting nearsightedness is using Phakic Intraocular lenes. This device is a thin lens that is planted permanently into the eye and it reduces the need for other vision correcting devices such as glasses or contact lenses.
Phakic lenses are made of plastic or silicone and are inserted into the eye without removing the lens of the eye. During surgery, the lens is inserted into the eye via a small incision. This method of vision correction is meant to be permanent and can only be removed with surgery. However, there is no guarantee of return to prior vision status if the implanted lens is removed.
There are several risks associated with this surgery.
1. Permanent loss of vision
2. Visual Field Disturbances that may include halos
3. Need for secondary surgery to repositioning, remove, or replace lens
4. Over and Under Treatment
5. Cloudy cornea (covering of eye) leading to vision loss
6. Increase eye pressure
7. Infection
8. New onset cataract
9. Bleeding
10. Severe Inflammation
At this time, this procedure is still relatively new and long term data is still being collected.
